Heel Bursitis / Retrocalcaneal Bursitis

Heel Bursitis or Retrocalcaneal bursa is a fluid filled sack / cushion located at the back of the heel. It normally acts as a cushion between the Achilles Tendon and the calcaneus (heel bone) to prevent friction.

Retrocalcaneal bursitis occurs when the bursa is irritated and inflamed causing pain.

Causes:

Possible causes of retrocalcaneal bursitis include sudden increase in activity levels (e.g. starting an intense workout routine without proper conditioning), poorly fitted shoes as well as trauma.

Treatment:

Treatments may include temporary reduction in activity levels, modification in exercise routines, temporary heel lifts or orthotics.

For best management of any retrocalcaneal bursitis symptoms or any suspected bursitis symptoms anywhere in your feet please visit Foot focus Podiatry in Perth by calling 9258 4152 or booking online.
