Metatarsus Adductus is a common foot deformity affecting newborns and children where the metatarsal bones turn inward toward the body. It may be flexible (can be straightened to some degree by hand) or non-flexible.
The exact cause of Metatarsus Adductus is unknown, but factors such as family history of metatarsus adductus as well as the position of the baby in the womb (breech) could increase the risk of developing the deformity.
Most cases of Metatarsus Adductus resolves in the first 2-3 years without treatment. Monitoring as well as gentle stretching exercises may also be advised. Devices such as braces and straight last shoes are used to treat more severe cases.
