Sever’s Disease

Sever’s Disease, also known as Calcaneal Apophysitis is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel in adolescent children. It is most often caused by repetitive stress to the heel during growth spurts.

Symptoms:

  • Pain/tenderness in the heel with pressure or with certain activities such as running or jumping.
  • Mild inflammation in the heel area

Treatment:

Treatment for Sever’s disease typically revolves around trying to reduce the inflammation at the back of the heel where the Achilles tendon attaches. This may involve reducing activities that aggravate the condition and using device such as heel raise and / or orthotics.
